The Name "Plum": Ripe with Possibilities

The name "Plum Midwifery" came to us after a night of brainstorming around a big table surrounded by close friends. We are so fortunate to have our name born out of such a lovely gathering of people who genuinely care about women's health, midwifery and our clinic specifically.

Plum has a variety of meanings beyond the delicious fruit most people have a positive association with of summers spent in orchards, of fruit stands and picnics. Cheekily we liked that it also meant "an excellent or desirable thing." We strive to have your care with us meet such a standard.

In some Asian cultures women eat plums before birth as they are believed to help them through the process of childbearing -- making it all the more fitting a name for midwives helping women in childbirth.

Finally we liked the symbolic imagery. The round, juicy ripe fruit, like the round juicy ripe belly of an expectant mother. We felt it symbolized that both our practice and the women in our care were ripe with possibilities.

Our Clinic

Plum Midwifery is a space to relax, have a cup of tea and take an active role in your pregnancy, birth and post partum. By setting our practice in a more intimate setting (adjacent to one of the midwives houses in the woods) and by giving care that is compassionate and heartfelt we hope to encourage a sense of ease when you come to your appointments.

We offer midwifery services that honour women and their families as the primary decision makers. You'll find our 45 minutes -1 hour appointments give you the time you need to have your questions answered, to be informed of your care choices and to form a meaningful relationship with the midwives who will catch your baby. We welcome women to bring their partners and other family members they want to include in their care.

We are located within a 2 minute drive from Point Holmes Beach, from the Lazo Marsh. We're within minutes of many other beautiful walks on the beach and woods that can be a lovely addition to your appointment day. We are also within a five minute drive from downtown Comox and from St Joseph's Hospital where we have privileges.
