My path toward midwifery began with my being present for the birth of my little sister when I was six years old. From that day on, I knew that I would someday be involved with maternity care.
In my early twenties, I owned and operated a massage clinic in Powell River where I began working increasingly with pregnant women and at times being asked to attend their births as a support person. In 2007 I enrolled in the Women’s Studies program at North Island College and moved to Comox where I opened a birthing home for women and their families who had to leave their communities to access midwifery care. During this time I trained as a doula and breastfeeding counsellor, and had the opportunity to work alongside midwives for the first time which only affirmed that midwifery was the path I wanted to be on.
During my training in the UBC Midwifery Program, I studied under midwives in: Vancouver, Nelson, Uganda and Nanaimo, where I continued on working as a registered midwife after graduation.
It is such a great pleasure to be back in the Comox Valley and to be joining the team at Plum. I look forward to meeting all of the families who come into our care and to being a part of this wonderful community!
